For this assignment, you are expected to discuss your understanding of and thoughts about stress and trauma within the context of your social location and personal experience in light of relevant literature. Length: up to 5 pages.
What does reflection/ a reflective practitioner mean? Critical reflection involves the identification of deep-seated assumptions which are embedded in a number of cultures in which we operate, especially about the social world and the individual person’s connection with it: An event significant to the person – what are our “unconscious” assumptions about it and how it affects our actions and ways of thinking (Jan Fook)
Self-reflection is about understanding WHO we are, What we bring to the table and HOW this can affect our practice.
This paper includes three parts. The first part is descriptive; the other two parts are reflective. Make sure that you separate those parts clearly and do not include descriptions in the reflective parts.
Part 1 (no more than one page) is DESCRIPTIVE: describe a stressful and potentially traumatic experience that you had or that you had intimate familiarity with through a close contact (personal or professional) with the person directly exposed to the stressor event.
Part 2 (2 pages) is ANALYTIC: Use at least two scholarly peer reviewed sources to reflect about and make meaning of the experience that you described in part 1. In this part, you need to discuss/analyze your experience in light of the knowledge from the articles. How can the articles help you explain and make meaning of your experience? DO NOT repeat or add descriptions! DO NOT report the content of the articles. Focus on APPLYING the content of the article to UNDERSTAND AND CONTEMPLATE on the description that you provided in the first part.
Part 3 is PREDICTIVE: (2 pages): What from the aforementioned experience do you expect to apply to your understanding of and work with traumatized clients? How do you think that your personal experience may affect your perspective regarding the topics of stress, crisis and trauma when practicing with individuals and systems whose life has been touched by stress and trauma? What can you learn from your experience that can guide your trauma work with clients? DO NOT make general statement regarding how you plan to work with traumatized clients. Rather, articulate clearly which lesson that you learned from your own trauma experience can inform your future trauma practice and how so.
Be as specific as possible and articulate what EXACTLY about your own experience led you to plan working with clients in a specific way. For example, rather than stating “My experience taught me that “I have to remember to not impose my preconceptions on the -client and understand all aspects of the story before taking any planned action with the client”, explain what about your own experience led you to this conclusion regarding future practice with clients.
Play close attention to the following points:
1. Clearly separate and differentiate the descriptive and the reflective parts (use separate sections with APA 7 compatible headlines).
2. Articulate explicitly how what you read informs your understanding of and reflection on the experience that you describe.
3. Apply APA for citations and list of references.
4. Carefully review for grammar.
